Kid's Holiday Activities

October 2020

In our ongoing fight against poverty Boomerang Community Centre has been running the Dundee Bairns Fun & Food Programme for the last two years during the School holidays.  With more than a quarter of Dundee’s children growing up in poverty and feedback coming back from schools – particularly in areas of high poverty – was that 60% of kids in Dundee get free school means whey they are at school, but in school holidays, particularly the Spring/Summer and Autumn holidays, we don’t know how they get fed.

With such an odd time of limited activity and restrictions in the “new normal” it was great to see some families still able to get out and about to take part in a very well thought at and careful planning provision.  The provision was supervised by two members of Boomerang staff along with a volunteer.

Through funding from the Dundee Bairns Project 9 children attended Boomerang Community Centre on the 5th/7th/12th and 14th of October from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 and participated in making a “Fairy Garden” that included painting a Fairy, a Fairy door, a Fairy house and also painted some stones.  The activities that we put on are fantastic for helping develop children’s imagination skills. We had some smiling faces whilst doing the activities, and the children waited excitedly for their lunch that was also supplied by the Dundee Bairns Project.  This healthy packed lunch included sandwiches, fresh fruit, crisps and a plain biscuit.

We conducted a survey on the families attending the holiday activities and the feedback shows that people were very satisfied with the provisions during the School holidays and especially through what is a very challenging time for all families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Thanks to the staff and volunteers at Boomerang, my Grand-daughter had a great time attending the holiday activities”.

“My child gets free school meals and I was worried about the School holidays as I did not have enough money to both feed and take my child out on an outing during the holidays.  My finances have been affected by the current COVID-19 pandemic and the activities and lunches that Boomerang put on were a godsend to myself and my husband and my daughter had such a great time and also made new friends”.

“I am a single mum with a young baby and I was worried about what my elder daughter would be able to do over the school holidays due to tight financial circumstances. When I saw what was happening at Boomerang I booked my daughter on the activities straight away”. The four days that she attended Boomerang was a godsend to me and my daughter was very excited and even counted the sleeps until she attended again”.
